No more Tech Projects.

I just finished my excel project and this is my last blog. It feels so good to be done this semester in Technology for PETE. At times I hated all the tedious work but now that it is over with I really didnt mind it that much at all. As a matter of fact I am glad I learned what I did, it will help me out a lot in my future not just at SRU but when I someday become a P.E. teacher too. My personal favorite project was probably the powerpoint, as long as it took me I was very pleased with how it turned out. It feels great to know that in two weeks I be at home hanging out by the pool. Hope everyone has a great summer!

Can Jam

Can Jam is one of my new favorite games. I first learned about it at Rugby Fest last year. It is so easy to play and so easy to set up. What you need is a frisbee and two equal size garbage cans, recycle bins etc. How you play is you set the garbage cans up about 20 feet apart. Then get two teams with two players on each team. One player should be at one can and the other at the other can (like setting up for horseshoes). Then players take turns throwing the frisbee. If the thrower hits the can it is worth three points. If the thrower comes close their parter can tap/hit the frisbee and if it hits the side of the can it is worth one point, if te partner can tip/slam it inside the can that is worth 2 points. If the thrower can make it directly in the can without their partner touching it then that team wins the game. You play to 21. It is a really fun game even if you cant throw a frisbee well.

Backpacking Trip

I think the backpacking trip in outdoor pursuits class is a lot of fun. I could see how the weather might not make it as fun, but if you have a good attitude you will love it. The trip was a great way for the class to bond and get to know each other a lot better. Even thought the backpacks got a little heavy at times the hike itself was easy and anyone could do it. You get to see some great views of nature and even some wildlife. For example on our class backpacking trip we saw a bald eagle, it was huge!

Frisbee Golf in the Quad

I had a lot of fun yesterday playing frisbee golf in and around campus. Along the way we even picked up more people who saw us playing and wanted to play too. All we did was take turns picking a tree, pole in the ground, garbage can or building and try to hit it in the least amount of throws. The person who threw it in the least amount of throws whatever that number was that is what the par was for that hole. My favorite hole was from outside Harner Hall to the rock structure in the quad in front of the library. It only took me two throws which I am pretty sure I could never to again.

Podcast Music

When doing the podacast I had more fun then I should have. Before even starting what I was supposed to do (talking about the effects of smolking cigaretts) I discovered how to make music with the program. All I did was make a sound with my hands or mouth and loop it together with other sounds. Before I knew it I had a awsome beat just from tapping on the table and saying "dode dode dode dode." It saounded great I could have done that all day. I felt like a music producer.

Electronic Portfolio

I finally finished my electronic portfolio and it feels great. At first I thought it was going to be the hardest school assignment I ever did. Not that its over wish I didnt think it was that bad. Dont get me wrong there were some parts that I hated and found to be very teadious but I am satisified with how it went. Also I though I would hate it and it would be something I would go through just to get done, but I am glad to say Im proud of how it turned out. Hope everyone did well on it.

Flying Cars

I was watching a TV program on the Discovery Channel the other day about flying cars. From what they were saying it is a very real possiblity to have a flying car in the next ten years. They showed so many different models that I almost believed them. On the other hand though there are so many other variables. Different liscences, mechanics for these new flying cars, signs and safety concerns, speed limits and so many other things need to be considered. Yes it would be awsome to have a flying car but there are so many car accident on the ground if all the sudden everyone had a flying car the accident rate would be ten times as much I feel, with ten times as many deaths.

Nike plus soes

Nike has really been tinking on theis one. They recently came out with Nike + which is a little sencer that you can put in your shoes and iPod. What the sencer in the Nike + shoe does is it relays information to your iPod while you are running, walking etc. The information that it relays in your speed, distance covered, how many laps on a track you went and calories burned. Another interesting feature it has is depending on how fast your moving the sensor

Wow is it hot in Field House room 119

Why does it have to be so hot in the field house room 119? You think as long as it has been and as many classes that there have been in the room that something would have been done. It is miserable I am sweating just typing this blog. I personally cant stand it. I am looking around the room and people look like they are going to fall asleep. I feel bad for Dr. Leight because she has to deal with this sticky heat all day. I only have to deal with it for an hour and fifteen minutes.

No More VHS Tapes

I find it funny how VHS is no longer even a option when buying movies. I guarentee that our children will not even know what a VHS or Cassett tape is. Who knows the way that technology is advancing so quickly our kids might not even know what a DVD is. I recenly threw away close to 4o VHS tapes which just 5 years go I could have gotten at least 100 dollars for, now they are worthless and in the garbage. I cant even watch VHS tapes the VCR at my house in Slippery Rock broke and I cant think of a reason to by a new one. I'd rather save my money and by some DVDs.

How the weather affects people excercising

I have recently noticed how much more active people at Slippery Rock seem to be now that the sun is out and the weather is getting nicer. I have been getting calls everyday about someone trying to get together a game of ultimate frisbee or football because the temperature is just right for it. It may be chilly in the beginning of the game but once you move around and your heart get beating faster then your body warms up quick. Not only people play sports outside but I see more and more people running outside on the sidewalks everyday. Another thing is the ARC seems to be full of people a lot more now. It always is busy when I go but now it is crazy, when lifting weight you have to wait for a machine almost every time.

Everyone has a cell phone

I think it is funny how everybody it seems has a cell phone. Just 15 years ago hardly anybody had one. Just look around next time your walk to a class at how many people are one the cell phone on campus. I cant say anything bad because I too love my cell phone and know my life would be a lot harder and less social if I didnt have it. I cant even think what it would be like if everyone didnt have one. I dont think I would be nearly as active as I am now.

Special Effects in Movies

Movies today have so many special effects because of the growing technology and they seem to be getting better every movie. It amazes me how far the special effects have come in movies especially action movies. I recently saw the Transformers movie a while back and it blew me away how real the actual transformers looked. If I didnt know better I would have thought they were real. The special effects makes movies so much more intence because you can create anything you want and have the most dangerous senerio in a movie and have no risk of anyone getting hurt because it is made on the computer. Also another movie with amazing special effects is Beowulf, the entire movie is computer animated and there were part in the movie that I would put money down saying it was real.

Video Camera at a Party

Someday I would like to have someone follow me with a video camera at a party. THings always seem to happen that are worth having on film. Wether they are crazy events or funny events I would a lot of the time like to see them again. Sometimes it is hard to remember these events too. With the technology today that would be very easy. I could have the video camera my self and people might not even notice. Just think 25 years ago if someone had a video camera at a party they would be the center of the party because they were so rare and big and not everybody had one like they do today.

Small Digital Camera I Saw

cameras get smaller and smaller every day it seems. I recently saw a digital camera that was smaller than my cell phone. It still had all the features of a regular sized digital camera too. The buttons on it were so small that some with big fingers could never operate this camera. The price was reasonable for the camera I thought it was only like $100 which is a lot less that other digital cameras out on the market.

Tag is Good Excercise and Fun

The past two Fitness Edu. classes that I attended have been so much fun. We are working on warm up games. Each pair of students is responsible to teach the rest of the class how to do a warm-up game, each one is different. Even though each game is different a majority of them resemble It Tag. The class has been playing these games and I find them to be so much fun. I get my heart rate up and get good excercise without even realizing it. I could see how overwieght people might not have a much fun though because they cant escape the person who is it as easy and it is hard for them to catch people when they are it. Lucky for me I am fast so I love it.

Wii is good excercise

Wii to me is a great way to excercise. It is the best on a rainey or cold day just to sit inside and play. I have even broken a sweat many times playing different games. I think that boxing is one of the most physically demanding games there is on Wii. You are constintly moving your arms.

I Hate When the Internet is Down.

The internet is such a wonderful thing but when it isnt working it really annoys me. I have a wireless internet connection in my house, it works I would say 98% of the time. However the 2% of the time when it is down for whatever reason I cant stand it. It always seems to go out right when I need the internet to do school work. So instead of getting a 10 minute project down in my room I have to go all the way to the library just to finish it. A good example is when I was going somewhere ( I dont even remember where I was going) and I need to get directions off the internet it was down and I had to go to the library to print out directions and then go where I was going. So much time would have been saved if I could have just looked up directions in my room and then leave.

HD TV is Wonderful

My roomate recently got a 56 inch Sony HD TV for our house and I just might fail college because of it. The picture is so much better it is amazing and I cant stop watching it. Watching sports in HD is almost like being being on the field, court etc. You can see the sweat dropping off the athletes faces and the stitches on their jerseys. As much as I love watching sports my favorite HD channel is the Discovery Channel you can see everything so vividly expecially animals. The Planet Earth series is amazing. If you wanted to you could count every hair one a persons head or on an animal. After he got his I immediatly started saving and I am planning on getting an HD TV of my own in the very near future.

All this snow and no classes cancled

I realize that students at SRU pay a lot of money to be educated here, but I dont think it is worth risking the health and even lives of students just so they get that education they pay for. The roads in Slippery Rock are terrible especially today. If I didnt live as close to campus as I do there is no way I would even think of getting in my car, which sucks in the snow, to go to class for 50 minutes. Then come back two hours later for another 50 minutes. I agree going to class is important but not when the roads are as bad as they are and especially when it is this cold. Just lisen next time it is quite in a classroom, every few seconds there is a sniffel or a cough. I blam this on the cold weather and the university for making students be in it.

Is the twenty minute swim necessary?

I already took aquatics fundamentals with Dr. Kovacs but I over heard somebody complaining about the 20 minute swim yesterday and I remembered how much I hated it. I personally feel that in aquatics class we do enough lap swimming that it shows students have good enough swimming endurance. The 20 minutes swim doesnt teach anyone anything and if anything it hurts their swimming strokes, I dont know a single person who was able to keep their strokes perfect throughout the whole 20 minutes. You just get to fatigued and do whatever you can just to stay afloat and keep moving forward. Even though I didnt enjoy it at all, it did feel so good to be done and know that I accomplished it. Good luck anyone in aquatics!

The First Quiz in Tech. for PETE

Today in Technology for PETE we took the first quiz on chapters 1 and 2. I was scared after the last class because I heard the rumor that the quizes are hard and people hardly ever pass them. After taking the test I really didnt think it was that hard. I definaly could have studied more but personally I think I did pretty good even though I dont know what grade I got on it. Questions nine and ten were the only ones that I had a hard time with and had to think about. Atogether I think I passed and know now how to prepare for the next quiz which is next week.

Patriots Better Lose

Sorry to any Patriot fan but I really hope they get shut out and not only that I hope Tom Brady falls off the bus and gets hurt. I dont feel they deserve another championship. Bill Bellichick is a proven cheater and his team is filled with players who take pay cuts just to play for him which makes no since to me. All these players making less money then they could wouldnt it be great if that didnt pay off for them. Also the team already had a perfect regular season, why give them a championship. Speaking of which they had such a easy regular season schedual. There are college teams that could beat some of the teams they played, like the Miami Dolphins. Anyway come Sunday I will cheer for the Giants even though I never in my life thought I would be cheering for any team other than the Pittsburgh Steelers.

What I wish I could do today.

Today has been one of those muggy, dark days. All I felt like doing all day was sleeping. The weather wasnt bitterly cold which was nice but it made everything so muddy. I wish today the weather was beautiful and I could go fishing. I dont know why but for some reason I really feel like fishing today. I would love to spend all day in the sun, in a boat, fishing. Sometime soon the weather will change and I cant wait.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Alex Weir. I am a 19 year old sophmore at Slippery Rock University. I am currently majoring in Physical Education. I really enjoy it here even though sometimes the weather can be a pain in the butt. I love being outdoors and when it is bitterly cold outside it makes the outdoors miserable. However, I do like the snow for snowboarding. I also enjoy playing football, ultimate frisbee, doing just about every water sport there is and like I said being outdoors and all kinds of outdoor activities.
